Cal has reportedly parted ways with head coach Sonny Dykes after four seasons and a losing record of 19-30. Given that, Cal is to pay him up to 70% of his total salary for the remainder of the term, according to his extension signed past year.
"Coach Dykes clearly built up our program-both on the field and in the classroom-and he leaves Cal in a stronger position than when he arrived", athletic directore Mike Williams said in a statement. But that's the obvious implication - especially since Cal plays in the same conference where Kelly rose to prominence with Oregon. "I think, if we have that same commitment in football, we'll have championship football teams". It was Cal's first eight-win season since 2009 and its first bowl win since 2008. In 2016, the Golden Bears scored 37.1 points per game, but the defense was a liability throughout Dykes' tenure, ranking in the bottom six in scoring defense in three of Dykes' four seasons. Insiders expect CAL to announce Dyke's replacement soon. The Bears regressed to 5-7 this season following the departure of No. 1 overall pick QB Jared Goff and his top six receivers. His best year at Cal was in 2015, when Dykes led the Golden Bears to an 8-5 record and Armed Forces Bowl victory. While Kelly seems to prefer the National Football League to the college game - and the recruiting and politics that come with it - he was a sensation at OR, first as offensive coordinator, then at head coach.
