The disgraced shot-putter had previously had the London 2012 gold medal taken away from her because of a failed post-competition drugs test which promoted Adams to the top spot.

The three weightlifters are; Cao Lei in the 75-kilogram class; Chen Xiexia at 48kg; and Liu Chunhonog at 69kg.

The Chinese Olympic Committee said yesterday that it supported the IOC's decision. In this case, the Chinese athletes tested positive for the following.

The three women were part of the Chinese team that won eight of the 15 weightlifting medals on offer, with Chunhong also winning gold at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, a medal she will keep despite this positive test.

According to the IOC, the additional analyses on samples collected during the Olympic Games Beijing 2008 and London 2012 were performed with improved analytical methods, to possibly detect prohibited substances that could not be identified by the analysis performed at the time of these editions of the Olympic Games.

Four athletes have been disqualified from the London 2012 Olympics: Turkish weightlifter Sibel Simsek, Azerbaijani lifter Intigam Zairov and Armenian Norayr Vardanyan. By the end of December, the number of positive tests from the re-analyzed samples had reached 101.

Weightlifting accounts for the bulk of positive tests, followed by athletics, wrestling and cycling.

The results of the new tests will feature during discussions in April to map out the program of future summer Olympics.
