It looked as if Pakistan were going to serve up their now typical fourth innings collapse (after suffering one in the second Test in New Zealand and in Australia) in their first innings after Josh Hazlewood removed both Sharjeel Khan and Babar Azam in his second over.

Pakistan made a terrible start in response, losing two quick wickets, but the tourists composed themselves to end the day 126-2 at stumps, still 412 runs adrift in their bid to avoid a series whitewash.

"At two for six we were in serious strife, but to see the resilience, character and intent that has been shown by Younis and Azhar has been a real example to the rest of the dressing room of how we need to play", coach Mickey Arthur said.

Azhar Ali and Younis Khan forged a 120-run partnership to stall a rampant Australia.

Australia has had more to smile about this Test, as in the series, and had another bright spot in Handscomb, 25, who scored his second century in just four Tests to join Warner (113) and Matt Renshaw (184) in piling on the agony for Pakistan.

Handscomb, batting on 110 off 204 balls, went really deep in the crease and tried to cut Riaz's wide yorker, only to "dislodge" the leg-bail.

Peter Handscomb's glorious summer of runs and tons has taken him where no Australian has been before.

"If Spidercam hadn't been there, I might've been a chance to get away with that".

Debutant Hilton Cartwright made the dream start to his Test career with a glorious cover drive for four on his first ball, before he was bowled for 37 by Imran Khan (2-111). Matthew Wade also chipped in with 29 before he was caught sweeping Azhar and after Mitchell Starc's dismissal for 16, Smith brought the innings to a halt.

Pakistan reached 126/2 in reply to Australia's 538-8 declared. He shared in a 142-run stand with Handscomb. Hughes died after being struck on the back of his helmet by a bouncer during a domestic match back in 2014 with Warner being on the fielding side that day.

"Yasir has a (left) hamstring strain".

"It has been a nice start and something I didn't think would happen when I made this step, " Handscomb said.
