The United Nations defines refugees as people forced to flee their home country to escape persecution, war or violence.

"The needs of refugees and migrants worldwide have never been greater, and the United States resettlement programme is one of the most important in the world", says a joint statement from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). "We are not going out to harm people of other countries".

Stars have also declared their opposition to the U.S. president's executive orders.

When asked if Christians would be given special status, he replied "yes", adding: "They've been horribly treated... everybody was persecuted in all fairness, but they were chopping off the heads of everybody but more so the Christians. This is a religious decision I think", Abu Mohammad said.

"We are still looking into that", said Patterson.

"UNHCR and IOM remain committed to working with the U.S. Administration towards the goal we share to ensure safe and secure resettlement and immigration programmes".

The agencies say it's important to treat refugees equally, regardless of their religion, nationality or race.

Trump justified the moves as necessary to prevent "radical Islamic terrorists" from entering the US.

For Mustafa and his family, who are Syrian refugees in Jordan, a better life in the United States seemed within reach.

"I hereby proclaim that the entry of nationals of Syria as refugees is detrimental to the interests of the United States and thus suspend any such entry", Trump declared in his Friday's executive order. In a third step, he issued a 90-day ban on all entry to the United States from countries with terrorism concerns, including Syria, Iraq and Libya.

Salil Shetty, the group's secretary general, said: "These men, women and children are the victims of the same terror President Trump claims he wants to fight against". Some people had already packed their life in a way, made a decision to sell whatever they could sell, taken their children out of school.

"They're anxious about the specifics of this executive order", George said.

At another informal camp in the Bekaa, a Syrian mother-of-four says Trump's order is unjust. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton - to halt the state's participation in the federal government's refugee resettlement program.

Around 25,000 refugees were resettled in the U.S. between October and the end of 2016 under the UNHCR's programme for the most vulnerable, the agency said.

Patterson said in September he would potentially sue the Office of Refugee Resettlement if the refugee placement process continued to not be followed by alerting local municipalities before placement. "Admitting Syrian refugees at this time, without the ability to properly vet them, unnecessarily places national security and American lives at risk".
