After a 12-year investigation, the man police say killed Tara Grinstead, a 30-year-old teacher and beauty queen, is expected to make his first appearance in court on murder charges. According to investigators, Duke attended Irwin County High School, where Grinstead taught.

Ricketson did say new developments surfaced in recent days and will be shared with the news media Thursday afternoon.

"This gentleman never came up in our radar", J.T. Ricketson, special agent for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, said of the near cold case in a press conference Thursday.

Ryan Duke, is a former student of Grinstead's while she taught at a high school in Irwin County, GA.

Whittier cops, 1 suspect hurt in officer-involved shooting
The two officers were taken to LA County-USC Medical Center, where one was declared dead. "It's extremely tragic", Corina said. Authorities have not released many other details, and it was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting.

The case had stumped authorities for more than a decade. Before Duke's arrest, GBI interviewed more than 200 people without finding a single person of interest.

A massive manhunt was launched after Grinstead's disappearance, but the case proved hard due to the lack of evidence found in Grinstead's home, according to the GBI.

The GBI spokesman also declined to comment on other aspects of the case, such as Duke's motive, how Grinstead died and whether others were involved.

Grinstead's remains were never found.
