"Since people enjoy using FB Lite, we will continue rolling it out to other countries around the world", Facebook stated.

Facebook has announced that over 200 million people are now using the stripped-down version of its main app - Facebook Lite.

The app now supports 55 languages and is popular in many countries including Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and the Philippines, the U.S. social media giant said in a statement. With a support for 55 languages, Facebook is now planning to soon extend more countries including Israel, Italy, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates, Mashable notes. The app is compatible with smartphones running at least Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but it doesn't have some features that regular Facebook users might enjoy.

Facebook Lite was launched in June 2015 to make it easier for people to access Facebook in areas with spotty and poor internet connection.

Denis Villeneuve Is Officially Directing 'Dune'
While it was initially negatively reviewed, the film has gone on to enjoy cult-favorite status and very (very) devoted fans. A few months back came the news that Legendary Pictures was developing a new movie based on Frank Herbert's novel, Dune .

"FB Lite is helping business owners grow and reach customers on mobile even when bandwidth is at a minimum", Sandberg said in a new post. Her post gives the example of Sao Paulo-based wedding photographer Altiery Monteiro, who used FB Lite to use less data and save money.

To put it into perspective, Facebook draws over a billion users monthly on mobile with a major chunk coming from developing nations where the need to connect to the digital platform is palpable.

Performance improvements are a given with any update, especially when the company wants to assure a fast, reliable connection to the social network no matter what. The app has also contributed to an increase in Facebook's revenue by 52% this year. Now with 200 million users, it appears Facebook has created another popular application with Facebook Lite.
