The US Coast Guard is searching for Canadian documentary filmmaker Rob Stewart, who went missing while diving off the coast of Florida.

The US Coast Guard issued a statement saying it had received a report of a missing diver shortly after 5 pm (2200 GMT).

The other three divers emerged safely.

Mr Stewart's sister told CBC Toronto that he had been diving with three friends, who all made it back to the boat safely.

"The other diver got on board and was struggling to get on board and then fell unconscious", she said Wednesday.

"We're in the critical window of daylight right after he's gone missing where, if we're going to find him on the surface - where we'd like to find him - it's going to be today", Stewart's sister, Alexandra Stewart, said in an interview with CBC Toronto on Wednesday.

Coast Guard Senior Chief Nyx (NICK) Cangemi says the search for Stewart includes boat and helicopter crews and hasn't stopped since Tuesday afternoon.

"As long as there's a chance of survival, we're going to search", Cangemi said.

According to Alexandra, at the time he vanished, Stewart was on a diving expedition as he worked on his upcoming film "Sharkwater: Extinction", which is a sequel to his award-winning 2006 documentary.

A global wildlife photographer, Stewart has devoted his career to warning the world about threats facing sharks, other ocean life and humanity in general.

Rob Stewart, 37, an award-winning documentarian from Toronto, vanished in the waters near Alligator Reef in the early evening hours of Tuesday.
