The study found that global transfers increased over the last five years to the highest volume out of any five-year period since before the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Transfers of major arms - which include missiles, warplanes, submarines and air defence systems - were at their highest volume a year ago since 1990, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Nearly half of its arms exports went to the Middle East.
India's overall arms imports account for a grand 13% of all arms sales between 2012-16.
China boosted its global sales percentages from 3.8 percent of the market from 2007 to 2011, to 6.2 percent of the world market from 2012 to 2016, the report states.
She said the recent crash in oil prices will inevitably lead to a decline in arms trade in the region.
"The U.S. has delivered a lot of weapons in 2016, both very expensive weapons and strategically important weapons - missile systems, surveillance and navigation technology", said Aude Fleurant, the director of SIPRI's arms and military expenditure program. Imports by Southeast Asian countries also jumped, with Vietnam vaulting from the 29th largest importer in the previous period to the 10th largest now, taking in 3% of global arms imports. The Institute's database covers the period since 1950, while describing the trends in worldwide military transfers, the experts examined an average performance of a five-year period.
The world's top arms exporter was the United States, accounting for one-third of total arms exports during the 2012 to 2016 period.
"The USA supplies major arms to at least 100 countries around the world - significantly more than any other supplier state". Azerbaijan's arms imports from Russian Federation made 4 per cent. "It is now firmly a top-tier supplier, like France and Germany which accounted for 6 per cent and 5.6 per cent, respectively", said the think-tank.
