The Donald Trump Phone Call That Sent Australian Media Into Overdrive

03 February, 2017

But during Mr Trump's weekend conversation with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, the U.S. president is reported to have described the refugee agreement as "the worst deal ever".

While discussing the refugee deal, Trump told Turnbull that it was the "worst deal ever" and accused Australia of trying to send the "next Boston bombers" to the U.S. Trump also anxious that accepting the refugees from Australia would get him "killed" politically, according to the Washington Post.

After Trump reportedly said the agreement is "the worst deal ever", Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull tried to confirm whether the United States would honor the deal he reached with the Obama administration.

President Donald Trump blasted a "dumb deal" for the USA to take in hundreds of Australian asylum seekers following a fraught phone call with Australia's prime minister.

Under the terms of the deal - which now appears to be in jeopardy - Australia would, in turn, resettle refugees from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. It is not easy to have a fractious conversation between Washington and Canberra, but it seems the White House has done it.

The phone call was expected to last an hour, but Trump ended it suddenly after 25 minutes. The Trump administration later confirmed that it would receive 1,250 refugees from Australia but would apply "extreme vetting" to those seeking asylum.

Trump ripped Turnbull over an agreement for the accept 1,250 refugees from a detainment centre in the South Pacific, unnamed senior officials who were briefed on the call told the newspaper.

He refused to say whether the United States president was out of line in the way he handled the phone call or for labelling the deal dumb on Twitter.

Real are in Vigo trailing 2-1 from the first-leg. 'Maybe if we played a few more minutes we could have won it. It was the 62nd minute when Real Madrid equalized, courtesy of a direct free-kick by Cristiano Ronaldo.

On Wednesday, the president took to Twitter to share his take on his geopolitical spat with one of the United States' closest allies.

The agreement is exempt from Trump's recent executive order, which slaps a travel ban on citizens and refugees from seven Muslim-majority countries.

Pressed about the call after the tweet, Turnbull told Sydney radio 2GB that Trump did not consider it a good deal but "he has given his commitment".

When Mr Turnbull sought to discuss issues including the war in Syria, Mr Trump allegedly ended the call, making it far shorter than his conversations with Mr Putin, Germany leader Angela Merkel and Japan's Shinzo Abe.

Earlier the Associated Press cited an excerpt of a transcript in reporting that Trump told Pena Nieto he could dispatch us soldiers to deal with "bad hombres" unless Mexico's military could better control them.

"But you can also say, 'Why are we doing this?'" Trump continued.

"I wish he would sleep more and tweet less, but that's up to him", Graham told CNN.
