The National Weather Service office which serves New York City said snow rates of two to three inches per hour were possible Thursday morning.
All flights at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport were halted on Thursday morning due to the storm's intensity. The most current NWS alert forecasts snow accumulations in New York City between 10 and 14 inches.
Today [Feb.9th], over 3,000 flights were cancelled and all public schools closed in New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy said state colleges and courts would be closed. Travel delays are quite a possibility as at least 2200 flights have been cancelled across many parts of the Northeast.
The National Weather Service predicts that the most intense snowfall will be over by the early afternoon. A winter storm warning is in effect for the tri-state area, except for Nassau and Suffolk counties were a blizzard warning is in effect.
Blizzard conditions have been confirmed in MA and Rhode Island, including the areas of Boston, Hyannis, Marshfield, New Bedford, Block Island, Providence and Westerly.
The winter storm warning for the area will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday night.
The storm was expected to dump up to 18 inches in Boston, as much as a foot in New York City and up to 8 inches in the Philadelphia area.
