Winter storm warnings were in effect in Boston and Philadelphia as well as New York City today, where city public schools were closed and gusty winds blew snow sideways down the streets of Manhattan.

More than 3,500 flights scheduled for Thursday have been canceled, according to FlightAware.com, which tracks cancellations and delays; as many as 150 have already been canceled for Friday. The three NY area airports - LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty - saw hundreds of flights halted and delayed. The Port Authority of NY and New Jersey says Newark International had the most cancellations with 607 as of 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

Governor Chris Christie in the state of New Jersey said state offices would be closed for all non-essential employees on Thursday. Snow from "Winter Storm Niko" was falling at about one inch per hour, according to the Weather Channel.

Areas most impacted by the bad weather are New York City, Long Island and New Jersey, Upstate New York and New England. Temperatures drop as the day goes on and winds pick up, gusts from the N/NE this afternoon and this evening 35-45MPH likely, even higher towards coastal MA.

Roads and sidewalks are slippery and poor visibility is expected due to blowing and drifting snow and temperatures gradually decline and the winds increase. My latest forecast shows Monmouth County picking up 4 to 7 inches, Ocean County seeing about 2 to 5 inches, and the I-295 corridor shoveling about 3 to 6 inches.

Thursday's storm is expected to last 6 to 10 hours, said Carl Erickson, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather in State College, Pennsylvania. Baker urged people to stay off the roads to allow plows and sanders to do their work.

Meanwhile, the heavy, wet nature of the snow and the brisk winds could contribute to scattered power outages across the state. Many suburban districts canceled classes as well, even though they made that call before rain changed over to snow. It has the potential to be the most powerful storm that some areas have seen in a mostly snow-free winter.

East Hampton highway workers are prepared for the storm.

The storm is expected to dump as much as a foot of snow on the city before tapering off by the afternoon, officials said. Still, the city lifted its snow emergency at noon.
