Lee County's unemployment rate rose from 5 percent to 5.8 percent in January.
That's up slightly from 3.2 percent in January 2016.
For the first time in more than four years, Limestone County's jobless rate hit 6 percent in January, according to numbers released Monday by the state Department of Labor. He says the complete picture is one of a state economy approaching full employment. It was also well above the year-ago rate of 6.1 percent.
Simplified, the numbers indicate that while there are more people looking for jobs, there also are more who already have them than this time previous year.
The rate decreased one-tenth of a percentage point from December 2016, which was 3.9 percent. Therefore, nonfarm payroll employment is really a count of the number of jobs, rather than the number of persons employed.
