His committee plans to meet Thursday, the Times said.

"The rules on business appointments are established to counter suspicion that the decisions and statements of a serving minister might be influenced by the hope or expectation of future employment with a particular firm or organisation, and that an employer could make improper use of official information to which a former minister has had access", he wrote.

George Osborne failed to get in to a journalism trainee scheme but is now editor of The Evening Standard. We had something that up to a degree worked.

After Friday's (17 March) shock announcement that he will take on the role at the London Evening Standard while maintaining his seat as MP for Tatton in Cheshire, many debated whether the former chancellor will have enough time to fulfil both roles, in addition to his other jobs.

Former U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne's appointment as editor of London's Evening Standard is drawing scrutiny from Parliament on whether lawmakers are able to serve their constituents by holding two jobs.

The comments came as the chairman of the country's chief standards watchdog said rules regarding MPs' second jobs may need to be reviewed, given Osborne's decision not to resign as MP for his Cheshire constituency, which is nearly 200 miles from London.

"We are going to discuss whether rules on second jobs need to be changed in light of this".

Lord Bew, chairman of the committee on standards in public life, told the Sunday Times the current rules were "getting into rockier waters".

On BBC Radio 4's Today programme, it was claimed Mr Osborne showed interest in the editorship of the London newspaper after friends asked him for advice on applying for the job.

SNP MP Tommy Sheppard, who sits on the committee, told the Sunday Telegraph that there was "broad agreement" that a second job "must be something that demonstrably doesn't prevent you doing your first job as an MP".

He said: 'You can not edit the Evening Standard and represent your constituents in any meaningful sense. "And he's a highly capable guy and it should make politics more interesting".

'How many votes would you miss in the Commons, for example?

Despite this, the Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson voiced doubts over his appointment at the London Evening Standard and his ability to do the job.

She said: "I was 10 years a journalist and six years a politician".

"I wouldn't be letting someone else do it and I just don't think it works". "Well, George Osborne is a very clever man - I am sure he could do anything he puts his mind to" she said.

Evgeny Lebedev, proprietor of the newspaper, said: "In George, we have appointed someone of huge political achievement, and economic and cultural authority".

The government rejected a petition calling for George Osborne to give up his part-time jobs and concentrate on his parliamentary duties earlier this month.
