Interpol has issued a "red notice" for four North Koreans wanted in connection with the assassination of the half-brother of North Korea's leader.
Zahid said the authorities had traveled overseas to an undisclosed country to collect the DNA sample.
Angered by Malaysia's handling of the incident, North Korea imposed an exit ban on Malaysian citizens in North Korea, prompting Malaysia to respond in kind.
North Korea has been pressing its people to pay more taxes to make up for shortages of funds needed to build Ryomyong Street, Kim Heung-kwang, an anti-North Korea activist, said in February.
The murder has resulted in a diplomatic meltdown between two countries with once strong ties.
Datuk Seri Zahid said the North Korean Embassy was in no position to claim the body without approval from Mr Kim's next of kin.
The four men have been named as suspects since the early stages of Malaysia's investigation on the death of Kim Jong Nam, the estranged half-brother of Kim Jong Un.
"They have given consent to let the government decide how to deal with the body", Noor Rashid Ibrahim said.

Two foreign women have been charged with his murder, but police are still seeking the four North Koreans whom they believe to be masterminds of the attack.
Zahid yesterday said Jong-nam's identity was confirmed based on DNA sample comparisons with one of the deceased's children.
The women told diplomats from their home countries that they thought they were participating in a prank for reality television. North Korea has rejected the autopsy from Malaysia and said his death was probably from a heart attack.
Last week, Malaysia formally identified the murder victim as Kim Jong-nam.
North Korea has blamed the United States and South Korea for the high-profile murder.
In a separate development, Prime Minister Najib Razak said Malaysia has not started formal negotiations with North Korea over the release of nine Malaysians stranded in Pyongyang.
