Trump Signs Bill Authorizing NASA Funding, Mars Exploration

It supports use of the International Space Station through at least 2024, along with private sector companies partnering with NASA to deliver cargo and experiments, among other steps.

President Trump signed a law Tuesday authorizing funds for a crewed NASA mission to Mars.

During the bill signing, the president turned to Sen.

The Committee on Human Spaceflight said a mission to Mars was "the appropriate long-term goal for the human spaceflight program".

"For nearly six decades NASA's work has inspired millions and millions of Americans to imagine distant worlds and a better future right here on Earth", Trump explained during the signing, which was attended by astronauts, lawmakers and scientists.

According to the Associated Press, Trump signed the NASA Transition Authorization Act Tuesday, which adds a human mission to Mars to NASA's agenda while also green-lighting a $19.5 billion budget for 2017.

"With this legislation, we support NASA's scientists, engineers, astronauts and their pursuit of discovery", he said. "Also this bill calls for ongoing medical monitoring and treatment of our heroic astronauts for health conditions that result from their service", Trump said.

NASA's Robonauts are being placed to the test in Mars-like obstacle courses in order to pave the way for future humanoid space exploration. "It advances space science by maintaining a balanced set of mission and activities to explore our solar system and the entire universe". I look forward to working with the new administration to implement these policies and to restore American leadership in space. "These programs play into the strengths of the Marshall Space Flight Center and focus on areas in which Marshall has excelled for more than half a century".
