"The situation is extremely deplorable and we are doing everything to rapidly retake control of Bangassou", said the MINUSCA chief.

About 1,000 people held hostage in a mosque amid violent clashes in southeastern Central African Republic have been freed, a spokesman for the United Nations peacekeeping force (MINUSCA) said on Monday. It is alleged that the anti-Balaka were responsible for the death of 19 people including 13 of Fulani ethnicity, and an Imam.

Spain condemned the attack on civilians and a soldier of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) contingent on Saturday and offered its condolences to the families of the civilian victims and the deceased Helmet, as well as to the authorities of Morocco and the auto, said a statement from the Spanish Foreign Ministry.

On 7 March, UPC elements reportedly attacked the town of Goubali 2, in central Central African Republic, killing eight civilians and looting and burning houses.

Rochdi said a total of 26 bodies have so far been identified in the town and are being recovered by aid workers.

In eastern auto, between 7 and 15 March, anti-Balaka elements reportedly attacked and killed 10 Fulani civilians in Site Chinois village and another three civilians in Bimbe village near the town of Bria.

The members of the Security Council expressed their deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of the peacekeeper killed, and their deepest sympathy to the family of the peacekeeper injured, as well as to Morocco, and to MINUSCA.

More than 1,000 residents had fled their homes and had taken refuge in a mosque; some 1,500 others in a cathedral; and 500 others in a hospital, humanitarian agencies said.

At least six United Nations peacekeepers have been killed.

The African Union, France and Spain have also strongly condemned the recent attacks against MINUSCA.

Last week, a Christian rebel group in the auto ambushed a UN convoy, sparking a firefight and kidnappings that left four peacekeepers killed, eight injured and one missing, the United Nations said.

Up to 8,500 people were displaced in the fighting, he said, and the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs plans to lead an inter-agency fact-finding mission there.
