On Saturday night, thousands of police officers gathered in Washington D.C. for a candlelight vigil to kick off "Police Week", the annual observance of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Bates, of Lancashire Constabulary, said: "Every single day, in forces up and down the country, officers put themselves on the line in order to keep the public safe". The service is taking part at 11025 Voyager Parkway in Colorado Springs.
A memorial service at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hancock County Courthouse in Bay St. Louis will remember five law enforcement officers killed in that county.
Seventh-grader Sam Hendrix will give the speech this year.
"There are actually many answers to that question and many reasons why people choose law enforcement", Vaughn said.
Finally, the ceremony also honored Virginia State Police trooper Charles Eugene Morris, who was killed in 1962 while assisting the Patrick County Sheriff's Office with an arrest.
"It's a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice that our brothers have made in the past and the sacrifice that everyday when we go out that we can make and for the families that are here after that tragedy comes by", says Lieutenant Bryan Weed of the Troy Police Department.
"I know a few officers who have been in situations before that could have resulted in this day", she said.

"This campaign aims to fund a physical memorial and a digital experience, as well as a living memorial that will help to support the families of the fallen".
The ceremony is conducted annually in observance of national Police Memorial Day.
