At a combined capacity of 520,000 barrels per day, the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) and its less notorious brother, the Energy Transfer Crude Oil Pipeline (ETCO) transfer crude from the Bakken formation in North Dakota to the USA refining hubs of the Gulf Coast and a storage/terminal hub in IL.

The oil will flow from the Bakken/Three Forks production areas in North Dakota to a storage and terminal hub outside Patoka, IL and/or down to additional terminals in Nederland, TX, the firm said. Together with the Illinois-to-Texas Energy Transfer Crude Oil Pipeline, it has 520,000 barrels per day of commitments from shippers, leaving room for another 50,000 barrels. Law enforcement and pipeline developer Energy Transfer Partners say safety was the top priority.

The pipeline prompted hundreds and sometimes thousands of Native American and environmental activists to camp in North Dakota to protest, saying it would disturb sacred sites and could pollute water used by Native Americans. The Dakota Access Pipeline has started shipping oil on Thursday to contractors between North Dakota and IL, the Associated Press reported.

Meanwhile, four Native American tribes in the Dakotas are still fighting in court, hoping to persuade a judge to shut down the line.

The 1,172-mile (1,885-km) pipeline will carry Bakken crude from North Dakota through the Midwest, which will then be transported through a connecting pipe to the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Opponents said the pipeline's route under Lake Oahe near the reservation would threaten the tribe's drinking water, and the oil it carries would be destructive to the climate. The Dakota Access pipeline and a feeder line leaked more than 100 gallons of oil in western North Dakota in separate incidents in March, and the Dakota Access line leaked 84 gallons of oil in northern South Dakota in April. But President Donald Trump, fulfilling campaign promises, quickly reversed Obama's decision after taking office.

"This pipeline became operational today, yet it has already leaked at least three times", said Dave Archambault II, Standing Rock Sioux chairman.
