Assistant Police Chief Toney Chaplin said that in addition to the shooting victims, five others suffered various injuries, a lot of them occurring during the rush to escape.
"The suspect put the gun to his head and discharged the weapon", Mr Chaplin said.
The shooter opened fire at the UPS building at 17th and Utah Streets at around 8:55 a.m. Chaplin said he could not confirm that all three fatalities were UPS workers because there were other people in the building at the time of the incident.
KTVU asked a UPS employee, who happened to be on the streets of San Francisco for his normal route, if he knew Lam.

Chaplin said police have not determined a motive and were interviewing families of victims and witnesses to piece together what led the gunman to act.
Steve Gaut, a UPS spokesman said the shooter was a driver and in uniform.
UPS spokesman Kyle Peterson released a statement saying there had been an incident inside the company's San Francisco facility.
