When Roy expressed second thoughts, Carter encouraged her boyfriend to get back into his truck, where authorities later found his body and the vehicle filled with carbon monoxide.

The prosecution contends that Carter and Roy exchanged hundreds of text messages in which Carter urged him to follow through on his plan to kill himself.

In text messages, Carter - who was 17 at the time - told Conrad Roy: "You need to just do it".

Mr Cataldo said Roy had attempted to take his own life before, and had spent time researching methods online.

"She never admitted to anyone in the Roy family that she had helped Conrad for weeks to devise a suicide plan, or that she was on the phone with Conrad and knew he committed suicide in the Kmart parking lot", Flynn said. Jury selection is set to begin Monday, June 5, 2017, in the trial of. "I mean, you're about to die", she wrote. Flynn said Roy got out of the truck as the fumes became overwhelming and he got scared, but "she told him to get the fuck back in the vehicle". She is being tried as a youthful offender, a status that allows harsher punishments than typical juvenile cases and allows for court files to be open to public inspections.

In a text to Boardman on the night Roy died, Carter wrote: "I heard moaning like someone was in pain and he wouldn't answer when I said his name".

The couple met in Florida in 2012 but only maintained contact through text messages and phone calls.

Carter is charged with manslaughter in Conrad Roy's death.

The trial is being held before Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz, because Carter waived her right to a jury trial on Monday.

Carter is charged with manslaughter in Conrad Roy's death. When Conrad told her that he didn't believe in himself any longer, she brought up the fact: 'Take your life?' she questioned. "From July 6 to July 12 she asked Conrad in excess of 40 times when he was going to kill himself", the prosecutor said. "You already made this decision and if you don't do it tonight you're gonna be thinking abut it all the time and stuff all the rest of your life and be miserable", she wrote to him. "They know how sad you are, and they know that you are doing this to be happy and I think they will understand and accept it".

Carter posted grieving messages on social media and raised money in his name for mental health awareness.

A 20-year-old woman whose boyfriend took his own life three years ago is facing a USA court, accused of repeatedly encouraging him to commit suicide. "This is a suicide case", he said, "not a homicide".

During the opening statement, prosecuting attorney Maryclare Flynn accused Carter of using Roy as "a pawn in her sick game of life and death" just so she could play the part of "the grieving girlfriend".

Now the prosecution has the burden to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Carter's texts - her words - caused the suicide, while the defense argues that the cause was the determined choice of a depressed young man she may have urged onward. "He seemed fine", she said, although under cross-examination she added that her son later seemed "preoccupied".

Defense attorney Joseph Cataldo said that the boy had tapped Carter to help him carry out his mission to commit suicide.
