The combined efforts of a host of global and regional state and non-state actors against the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) have reduced the so-called caliphate's control of Mosul to one district and surrounded its fighters in Raqqa, resulting in more of ISIS' militants fleeing Iraq and Syria and fewer foreign fighters joining it.

Iraqi government forces have pushed deeper into the Old City of Mosul as they are nearing the end of their eight-month campaign to capture the de-facto capital of Takfiri Daesh terrorists in the crisis-hit Arab country and drive the extremists out of the strategic northern city.

The statement named many neighborhoods and commercial areas inside the old city still under the control of the extremist IS militants, including al-Farouq al-Thaniyah, Raas al-Kour, al-Maidan, Bab al-Jadid, Bab al-Toub and Sarijkhanah, along with other areas.

The operation to retake Mosul from the Islamic State forces began in October 2016, aided by the US-led coalition.

"The victory announcement will come in a very short time", Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on his website Monday evening.

Daesh still controls small parts of Iraq and Syria.

ISIS militants blew up the al-Nuri Mosque last week where the ISIS leader declared his so-called caliphate about three years ago.

Up to 350 militants are estimated by the Iraqi military to be dug in there among civilians in wrecked houses and crumbling infrastructure. Hundreds of civilians fleeing the Old City have been killed in the past month.

According to a Farsi report by Entekhab, as Mosul liberation operation is underway, the Iraqi army has saved a large number of the city's residents who had been used by ISIS as human shields. The Iraqi forces started attacking the western side of Mosul in February, a month after taking the side located east of the Tigris.

The group has carried out sporadic suicide bombings in parts of Mosul using sleeper cells.
