Israel launched strikes on Syrian military positions Saturday, close to the two countries' disputed border in the Golan Heights.

"In response to over 10 projectiles launched from Syria, IAF aircraft targeted origin of launches & 2 Syrian tanks", the IDF stated.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor which has been reporting on Syria's six-year war, said two Syrian soldiers were killed in the Israeli strikes.

"An official protest has been sent to the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces as the Israeli sovereignty was violated in an unacceptable way", the army said.

The Syrian regime is engaged in fighting against various disparate rebel groups in the region, including Islamic State and other Islamist fighters.

Officer in shooting: 'I don't have a taser'
A police audio recording has the officers shouting "get back!" and the woman saying "do it! do it!" "I could have taken her down". On the audio recording the officers are heard discussed a "safety caution" about the address stemming from the previous incident.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman warned that the regime would continue to "suffer the consequences" of any attack on Israel emanating from its territory. But with Israelis flocking to the Golan Heights in the summer for hikes and fruit picking, the military asked them to keep their distance from the border area.

Israel has conducted multiple air strikes in Syria since the Syrian war erupted in 2011. There was no damage and no injuries were reported in the mortar attack. Israel annexed the Golan area following the Six-Day War in 1967, but the move was never recognized by the worldwide community.

The government-controlled Syrian Central Military Media said Syrian troops and their allies repelled an attack by insurgents on the outskirts of the southern city of Baath on the edge of the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.
