The attackers targeted two symbolically significant places: the Parliament building and the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini-not to be confused with the country's current Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian media reported on June 9 that two of the suspects were arrested in a police raid in the western province of Kermanshah, where "some terrorist cells have also been dismantled".

"The mastermind and main commander of terrorist attacks on the parliament and Mausoleum of Ayatollah Khomeini was killed today by the security forces", intelligence minister Mahmoud Alavi was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency.

The ministry announced on Friday it had caught more than 41 suspects in connection to the Tehran attacks across the country.

The intelligence ministry said they were Iranians who had joined IS and travelled to its strongholds in Iraq and Syria before returning home. Daesh reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

A senior official, who also asked not to be named, said the attacks would push Iran toward "a harsher regional policy".
