The Edmonton Oilers winger's $6-million salary for this season and next was too big for general manager Peter Chiarelli, who needs cap room to sign Leon Draisaitl to maybe $7-million a year, so he dealt Eberle -the longest-serving Oilers player - to the New York Islanders for cheaper and younger right-winger Ryan Strome, who makes less than half at $2.5-million. "I think I've shown in the past that I can score in this league and I've had previous chemistry with John", said Eberle, who scored 20 goals and 51 points for the Oilers this past season.
The Islanders took Strome, 23, with the fifth overall pick in the 2011 draft, but he never performed to the level of his selection. While the Islanders' superstar center still managed a healthy 28 goals and 66 points, it was his lowest point total in any season where he had played at least 70 games.
A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Strome has accumulated 45 goals and 81 assists for 126 points in 258 career games.
The Islanders also have to be thrilled to get a prime scorer to help convince Tavares to stay in NY. Edmonton will play each divisional opponent four times, with the exception of the Calgary Flames, who they will face five times. Scoring 18 goals and 43 points in 69 games as a rookie, things looked promising for Eberle from the get-go.

Reports say Mueller probe now examining possible obstruction
It's unclear whether the president could override those rules and order Rosenstein to fire Mueller. Any such step would face a steep hurdle as it would require approval by the U.S.
Former UFC champion Matt Hughes injured in truck collision with train
UFC president Dana White told ESPN that Hughes was airlifted to a hospital but did not specify where the incident took place. Hughes (45-9 MMA, 18-7 UFC), 43, is a 2010 UFC Hall of Famer and one of the greatest 170-pound fighters in MMA history.
During the post-season, Eberle slipped down the Oilers' lineup and finished the post-season, the first of his career, without a single goal to his name.
As much as landing Strome made the deal work, though, the trade was also about cap space for Edmonton. Strome carries a cap hit of $2.5 million and will be a restricted free agent next year.
Beginning July 1, Snow can begin negotiations on a long-term contract extension with Tavares, hoping to prevent one of the best players in franchise history from departing following next season. NY has been looking to add a big name presence up front for a while, as they're hoping to make big strides over the coming year to maximize their chances of keeping star captain John Tavares, who is entering the final year of his current deal.
