"South Korea's carmakers are creating investment and employment in production factories in the U.S. Outstanding U.S. companies are also creating jobs in South Korea in industrial innovation and research and development", Moon said. Moon was born in South Korea three years later. Moon's taken heat from Trump in recent weeks over his delaying the deployment of the controversial USA -built missile defense system, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), which has made many regional powers unhappy, none more so than China.

According to the report, the official said there is still a "large gap" in the two countries' trade balance.

Trump's administration has seen little success in their harsh stance on North Korea.

The option of a pre-emptive military strike to destroy the North's weapons stores - something USA officials have said is a possibility - would be especially unsafe. The threat from the rogue state has reached to new heights under the present dictator Kim Jong-un so much so that the USA had to deploy its Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-ballistic missile defense system, inviting strong Chinese protests which sees the presence of the system on the Korean peninsula, in its backyard, breach of its sovereignty and a security threat. South Korea remains on the US Treasury "monitoring list" for its currency practices.

This is not the first time North Korea has accused its adversaries of attempting to assassinate its leader.

During Ms. Park's term, South Korean news media reported that South Korean and United States special forces had been training to "decapitate" the North Korean government in the event of renewed conflict on the Korean Peninsula, where an armistice has kept peace since the Korean War, which lasted from 1950 to 1953.

Presidential spokesman Kwun Hyuk-ki said the "resumption of dialogue with North Korea may need to be pursued in close cooperation and consultation with the United States, but South Korea does not need to be allowed by the U.S. to do so".

U.S. President Donald Trump once suggested he might talk to the DPRK's leader, Kim Jong Un, but has pursued a policy of quote: "maximum pressure".

North Korea has been conducting missile launches, amid increasing tensions in the Korean Peninsula despite receiving tough sanctions and warnings from the United Nations.

At the White House, Trump and first lady Melania Trump were preparing to host Moon and South Korean first lady Kim Jung-sook for dinner, in what would be the first meeting between Trump and Moon.

The senior White House official said neither Trump nor Moon will be treating THAAD as a central part of discussion, but it might come as a "routine matter of housekeeping". "During the process of realizing my government's plan", he said, "you will be able to invest in Korea without concern, and may even gain the opportunity to invest in North Korea". There is strong congressional support for ratcheting up sanctions, including against Chinese banks and companies that deal with North Korea.
