Hodgkinson shot House Rep. Steve Scalise on Wednesday before he was fatally shot by police who had been guarding the House majority whip on the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field, officials said.

Five people were injured, including Congressman Steve Scalise from Louisiana, who remains in critical condition at MedStar hospital. James told her that he was going to Washington, D.C.to "work on taxes" and "change the tax brackets", she said.

Duncan told reporters the morning of the attack that he had encountered Hodgkinson who asked him if it was Republican or Democratic lawmakers on the field.

"I had no idea this was going to happen and I don't know what to say about it", she said, flanked by St Clair county chief deputy Richard Wagner.

"I was a little shocked out of all the cities in the United States it would be a little Midwest town like this", said Claire Hatch, a lifelong resident. She also said she didn't know exactly who was shot on Wednesday, but she is sorry that he did this. "There's nothing I could do about it".

James Hodgkinson, 66, disappeared from the downstate community earlier this year, authorities say. And she suggested that maybe he wanted a break from living with their - her daughter's child who was living with them in their home.

One of the last encounters anyone had with Hodgkinson in Belleville was March 24, near his home just outside the Belleville city limits. The doctor described how a bullet from an assault rifle entered Scalise's hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way.

Former congressional staffer Matt Mika was shot multiple times in the chest and arm and "requires assistance to breathe", according to his family. Roll Call reported that the Alexandria Police, the Capitol Police, the FBI, and the ATF released a joint statement, which said, "ATF has conducted traces on these weapons and has determined that both were purchased by the shooter from federal firearms licensees".

Inside that vehicle, agents recovered a cell phone, a camera and a computer.

Bailey was spotted Friday in the Capitol, on crutches and out of uniform, accepting congratulations from fellow officers. Sources tell CBS News there were many writings among Hodgkinson's possessions, either on his person, in bags he carried or had in his vehicle.
