The New York Police Department is reporting that the shooter is dead.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the unfolding situation, according to a tweet from the mayor's office.

Police received multiple 911 calls about someone shot. The Times also reports that the shooter is a tall, thin man wearing a lab coat, citing an NYPD radio transmission. Several others are injured regarding the shooting at Bronx Lebanon Hospital.

Aerial footage of the scene showed the hospital surrounded by police cars and fire trucks.

The shooting happened just before 3 pm local time on the 16th floor of the hospital, located in the Mt. Eden area of The Bronx.

The newspaper reports that at least 5 to 6 people have been wounded, according to preliminary reports.

Police had no immediate information on whether anyone was killed.
