Israel and Jordan are bound by a 1994 peace treaty, but tensions have been high over the new security measures at the site in annexed east Jerusalem.

No further details were provided.

However, early this morning, it was revealed that Israel wanted to ban on reporting yesterday's incident to make time to question the security guard.

The shooting came at a time when Israel and Jordan were conducting intense contacts over an escalating crisis at a contested Jerusalem shrine that is revered by Muslims and Jews.

"The incident in Jordan has a potential of disrupting the relations between the two countries", said Oded Eran, a former Israeli ambassador to Jordan. The Palestinians were suspected of preparing attacks in the immediate future or of being members of the militant group Hamas, the official said.

The attack took place on Sunday evening when the owner of the embassy compound and two workers entered the premises "for a routine furniture replacement", according to the Foreign Ministry.

Israel reopened the compound on July 16, but with metal detectors and surveillance cameras put up at entrances. It has always been a flashpoint of anti-Israel protests at times of turmoil in the Palestinian territories.

Muslim religious leaders have alleged that Israel is trying to expand its control at the site under the guise of security, a claim Israel denies.

The restrictions triggered protests from Palestinians, who see the move as a punitive measure, and sparked violent clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces.

On Friday, three Israeli settlers were killed by a Palestinian in Halamish settlement north of Ramallah, West Bank, and Israeli PM Netanyahu announced his home will be demolished.
