The Red Devils had hoped to sign the Croatia global on the cheap as Inter needed to balance their books to comply with Financial Fair Play rules.

The problem for United is that Inter Milan are not going to do business unless they get the best possible deal for a key player, and with Woodward already spending more than £100million this summer he can not hide those kind of riches when doing business with other clubs.

According to Transfer Market Web, United are still to raise their opening offer of £33.6m (€38m) for the 28-year-old.

It all means Inter are under no pressure to accept any offers that they deem to be too low, leaving United facing yet more possible transfer misery.

Keita Balde Diao is now refusing to sign a new contract despite holding discussions over fresh terms since January 2017.

The winger wants to leave Inter and is a top target for Jose Mourinho this summer. "I don't think we will talk with his agents".

However, he gave little away as Inter boarded their flight to China for pre-season.
