About 75 percent of the layoffs will take place overseas, meaning the company is planning to cut up to around 1,000 US-based employees. As a result, the spokesperson said they are taking steps to notify some employees that their jobs are under consideration or that their positions will be eliminated.

Last week, reports surfaced that Microsoft planned a reorganization to focus more on cloud sales. Microsoft said a significant majority of jobs expected to be eliminated are outside the U.S. Microsoft officials, including CMO Chris Capossela, executive vice presidents Judson Althoff and Jean-Philippe Courtois, publicly discussed the reorganization, also without mention of layoffs.

Chief executive Satya Nadella has sought to reduce the tech giant's focus on software, shifting to cloud computing and business services.

Microsoft's recently rumored restructuring is said to be underway according to a report from Business Insider, who used references to several anonymous chats found on the app Blind. Fortunately, as Business Insider and All About Microsoft has reported, not everyone scheduled for meetings today will be let go.

Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft, speaks during a Microsoft launch event to introduce the new Microsoft Surface laptop and Windows 10 S operating system, May 2, 2017 in NY. It's unclear how these changes will impact the Microsoft channel ecosystem in the future, however.

The company is now concentrating on selling recurring subscriptions for software accessible on multiple devices, a rapidly growing trend known as 'cloud computing'.

We already knew that job cuts were coming.

Microsoft will cut upwards of 3,000 jobs as part of a shake-up of its sales staff. Its main rival for cloud dominance is Amazon - which is the market leader with its Amazon Web Services - but Microsoft's strong growth has cheered investors and impressed analysts.
