"The battle has reached the phase of chasing the insurgents in remaining blocks", the Iraqi military media office said in a statement. Iraqi special forces are still fighting a few hundred meters (yards) away.

Iraqi commanders said the militants were fighting for every scrap of territory, using snipers, grenades and suicide bombers.

In a Twitter message, French President Emmanuel Macron hailed Iraqi troops and their allies for retaking Mosul from IS.

The almost nine-month battle for Mosul has ruined parts of the city, killed thousands of civilians and displaced almost one million people.

Iraq launched the operation to retake Mosul from ISIS in October.

AFP reported that according to Iraqi police and army commanders, most of the foreign Daesh fighters in Mosul in recent months came from Russian Federation, particularly Chechnya, and other former Soviet bloc countries, as well as various Arab states.

The United States-led worldwide coalition, which vociferously backed the campaign against Islamic State in Mosul, has been conducting airstrikes against the militants and assisting troops on the ground.

The US Department of Defense requested $1.2bn in US budget funds for 2018 to continue supporting Iraqi forces. United States warplanes began air strikes against ISIL in August 2014, at the request of the Iraqi government.
