The name of Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, is doing rounds as the opposition's candidate for Vice-President of India. Gopal Krishna Gandhi, a retired IAS officer and diplomat, is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. He also served as the governor of West Bengal from 2004 to 2009.

Earlier, an informal opposition grouping of 17 parties, except Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD-U, fielded former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar as the candidate for the presidential election to contest against the NDA's candidate Ram Nath Kovind.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, TMC's Derek O'Brien, CPM's Sitaram Yechury, SP's Naresh Agarwal, NC's Omar Abdullah, JD (S)' Deve Gowda, BSP's Satish Chandra Mishra and RLD's Ajit Singh were among those who attended the meeting.
Polling and counting of votes for the vice president's post will take place on August 5.
