Opposition picks Gopalkrishna Gandhi for the post of vice-president

The name of Gopalkrishna Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi's grandson, is doing rounds as the opposition's candidate for Vice-President of India. Gopal Krishna Gandhi, a retired IAS officer and diplomat, is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. He also served as the governor of West Bengal from 2004 to 2009.

Earlier, an informal opposition grouping of 17 parties, except Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD-U, fielded former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar as the candidate for the presidential election to contest against the NDA's candidate Ram Nath Kovind.

Gopalkrishna Gandhi, the son of Devadas Gandhi and Lakshmi Gandhi, is the younger brother of Rajmohan Gandhi, and the late Ramchandra Gandhi, and Tara Bhattacharjee (Gandhi). He also served as High Commissioner to South Africa in 1996, where he earned a popular repute, as reported by the Outlook.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, party vice-president Rahul Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, TMC's Derek O'Brien, CPM's Sitaram Yechury, SP's Naresh Agarwal, NC's Omar Abdullah, JD (S)' Deve Gowda, BSP's Satish Chandra Mishra and RLD's Ajit Singh were among those who attended the meeting.

Polling and counting of votes for the vice president's post will take place on August 5.
