US officials on Tuesday were investigating the cause of a military transport plane crash that killed 16 service members including elite special operations forces a day earlier, leaving a miles-long trail of wreckage in rural northern Mississippi.
Fred Randel, the director of emergency management for Mississippi's Leflore County, said that none of the passengers survived the crash.
The county sheriff said that a helicopter was searching for possible survivors in the dark near the crash site in a soybean field.
"Michigan is grieving with the nation over the awful tragedy that claimed the lives of 16 Marines, including Detroit native Julian Kevianne", Snyder said.
Seven of the US troops killed were special operations forces, six were Marines and one was a sailor.
Marines says the plane was assigned to a reserve unit and the Marine Corps Forces Reserve is handling the investigation. A witness said some bodies were found more than a mile from the crash. It said the cause of the crash isn't known.

Local outlets have reported that the plane crashed in Leflore County ( a rural county in western Mississipi) off of Highway 82 Monday afternoon.
Officials did not release information on what caused the crash or where the flight originated.
In a statement posted to the social media site Facebook, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant expressed sadness, but also provided no details.
The KC-130, a transport plane manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is mostly used to transport personnel, equipment as well as fuel.
