Iran has accused a US Navy aircraft carrier of firing warning shots at Iranian vessels in the Gulf, the second such incident in less than a week.

A U.S. aircraft carrier "flew a helicopter near the Resalat oil and gas platform and approached the IRGC's ships", IRGC Navy said in a statement, adding that the United States also resorted to shooting flares to warn the Iranian side. US Navy ships left the area following the encounter.

The confrontation occurred just three days after a similar face-off involving the USS Thunderbolt.

The US warships later warned the IRGC forces and flew a helicopter, which approached the Iranian boats, the statement added. The Iranian ships then started firing rounds into the water, away from the US ships.

The u.s. Congress has yet adopted this week of new sanctions against Tehran.

The sanctions were prompted by the Muslim country's failed missile launch Thursday, which was believed to be part of a Tehran government plan to create an intercontinental missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
