Belgian soldiers shot dead a man in the centre of Brussels on Friday evening after he came at them with a knife, shouting Allahu Akbar (God is great), in a case authorities are treating as a terrorist attack. "Soldiers at the scene responded".

The Belgian Prime Minister, Charles Michel, expressed "all our support to our soldiers" in a Twitter post.

The prosecution service's spokeswoman said, 'With the identity that we now have it is a 30-year-old man who is not known for terrorist activities'.

Police confirmed that a man had been "neutralised" after an attack on several soldiers.

The Flemish outlet cites radio reports which suggest one of the slain man's victims is critically injured.

One of the soldiers received a wound to the face, the other suffered a hand injury. "We are following the situation closely".

Images showed police have sealed off a main street near the main Grand Place tourist attraction.

RTBF said a man attacked two soldiers with a knife in Boulevard Emile Jacqmain. It was already blocked by police at the scene and there was a man lying on the ground.

Belgium has been on high alert since suicide bombers killed 32 people in attacks March 22, 2016, on Brussels' main airport and subway system.
