President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un exchanged inflammatory threats last week that stoked fears of war.

Donald Trump says that North Korea has made a "very wise and well reasoned decision". "The alternative would have been both catastrophic and unacceptable!".

The North's official KCNA news agency said Kim was briefed on the "plan for an enveloping fire at Guam" during an inspection on Monday of the Strategic Force command in charge of the nuclear-armed state's missile units.

However, in the face of Trump's stern warnings he has since backed off, saying he would wait to see the "foolish and stupid conduct of the Yankees".

Speaking after the launch of a religious freedom report, Tillerson would not go into more detail as to how North Korea could demonstrate a commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

The lack of concessions from the U.S. indicates it's up to North Korea to back down at some point and offer more favourable terms for a compromise.

The U.S. seemed to be backing down from its demand that North Korea abandon its weapons program entirely before talks could begin, saying instead that North Korea needed to freeze its weapons testing for a period of time.

United States retail saleshit seven-month high in July
Building materials and supplies stores increased 1.2 percent over June and increased 8.5 percent unadjusted year-over-year. Health and personal care stores increased 0.4 percent over June and increased 1.6 percent unadjusted year-over-year.

The words attributed to Kim seem to pertain to the Ulchi Freedom Guardian military exercises that South Korean and United States troops are scheduled to initiate next Monday, exercises that the North Korean regime considers to be a provocation. And it could get worse if the lesson Trump learned from the standoff with North Korea was that his harsh comments deescalated the matter.

"They know what they need to do", she said.

North Korea tested a missile that has the capability of reaching the West Coast in late July.

Fan Changlong, a vice chairman of China's powerful Central Military Commission, told his American counterpart that military means should not be an option in solving the Korean Peninsula issues. Military images and fiery anti-U.S. messages are common in North Korean propaganda.

The UN security Council on 5 August adopted a resolution on North Korea, which envisages tougher sanctions against the regime.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, now in China, met with his Chinese counterpart on Tuesday.

Seeking to present a united front against North Korea and its supporters, Trump on Tuesday held a telephone call with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and agreed that the allies' priority is how to halt North Korea's missile launches.
