The insurgents, who posts statements through a Twitter account, changed their name to the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army - Arakan is another word for the Rakhine region. More than 100 people, mostly insurgents, were killed.

Bangladesh is under intense worldwide pressure to allow the fleeing Rohingya to cross into its territory, but it has pushed a number of them back, in what rights groups say is a contravention of its global obligations. "But if they wanted attention, they're going to get it".

Latest estimates from United Nations sources suggest more than 27,000 people have crossed into Bangladesh in the area around Cox's Bazar, while 20,000 more remain stranded between the two countries. They claim to be the victims of Myanmar military offensive.

More than 400 Hindu residents of Rakhine state crossed into Bangladesh after being attacked by armed men, officials and survivors said.

They took shelter in a makeshift tent at Paschim Hindupara of Kutupalong. "They are indiscriminately killing". "But they [unidentified armed men] killed all of them [Kanu, his daughter, and son-in-law]", said Bakul Bala, wailing.

His identity card issued by the Myanmar government described him as "Indian".

Aid workers have told horror stories of desperate refugees staggering to safety despite bullet wounds and burn injuries. He reiterated the fact that India is not a signatory to any of the Refugee Conventions and therefore is not bound to host the Rohingyas.

The principle of non-refoulement - or not sending back refugees to a place where they face danger - is considered part of customary worldwide law and is binding on all states whether they have signed the Refugee Convention or not.

Photographs from the scene showed the bodies of several small children lined up on the ground, covered with sheets. Bangladesh also rejects them.

Bangladeshi authorities have been stopping Rohingyas from entering the country since last week.
