Bullet Train Project aimed at reaping benefit in Gujarat poll

Modi defended the project saying it would provide a big boost to India's employment and growth, adding that the project was a gift from Japan to India given the concessional terms.

The 508km network between Ahmedabad, the main city in Gujarat, Modi's home state, and India's financial capital Mumbai, is expected to start operations by 2023.

To get electoral benefit from the project, Mr Modi organised a grand ceremony to lay the foundation stone of the bullet train project in Ahmedabad and also held a road show with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"China's vast trade with Japan and India greatly dwarfs bilateral trade between India and Japan".

China has always been wary of growing proximity between India and Japan with whom it has territorial disputes. "They shared the desire to further promote cooperation and collaboration in Africa in line with the priority measures identified through the India-Japan dialogue on Africa and the processes of the India Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) and Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD)". During his last visit in December 2015, Abe was in Varanasi, PM Modi's Lok Sabha constituency.

"The two Prime Ministers expressed their strong commitment to work together to enhance connectivity in India and with other countries in the Indo-Pacific region including Africa", it said. "This was based on strong ties of trust between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump", Abe said.

India and Japan also underlined the importance of all countries ensuring the development and use of connectivity infrastructure in an open, transparent and non-exclusive manner based on worldwide standards and responsible debt financing practices, while ensuring respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, the rule of law, and the environment.

The Joint Research Contract between National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science & Technology (AIST), Japan and Department of Biotechnology (DBT) will conduct joint research and to establish an International Center named as "DBT-AISTInternational CENter for Translational & Environmental Research (DAICENTER)" at AIST, Japan in order to promote science and technology in both the institutions and countries.
