Damian Collins says Mark Sampson sacking 'reflects very poorly' on FA

Focus turns to FA after Mark Sampson's sacking raises questions of competence
The Football Association sack Women's manager Mark Sampson on the grounds of inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour

The Women in Football group says questions over suitability were raised during his recruitment process.

The Football Association was warned about employing England women's manager Mark Sampson before he got the job, it has been claimed.

But Sampson's tenure was marked by accusations of impropriety that first arose only months after he was hired in December 2013, and on Wednesday - less than 24 hours after his team began qualification for the 2019 World Cup with a 6-0 win over Russian Federation - the English Football Association fired him, citing "clear evidence of inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour" in a statement announcing its decision.

The probe, sparked by allegations made by more than one of his Bristol players, took almost a year to complete, and while Sampson was found fit to remain England's coach, he was ordered to undergo training on "professional boundaries appropriate to a coaching role".

It has now been alleged that this behaviour was first reported to the FA around the time of his appointment in December 2013, and these claims became the focus of a year-long investigation by the governing body's safeguarding unit.

Sampson's last act of England women's coach was leading the Lionesses to World Cup qualification, after a 6-0 victory over Russian Federation.

These related to his time as manager of English top-flight side Bristol Academy, who are now known as Bristol City Women.

Glenn said that he chose to fire Sampson after he was given the full report of the probe last week.

FA bosses still face a parliamentary inquiry into their handling of Aluko's allegations of "bullying and harassment" - with the Chelsea Ladies star and fellow England striker Lianne Sanderson asked to give evidence in October.

It is only 12 months ago that Sam Allardyce was dismissed as manager of the men's team for unguarded comments to an undercover reporter, and the FA is still under the microscope for what it knew about predatory paedophiles working in football in the past.

Despite Sampson being cleared in 2015, FA CEO Martin Glenn, reviewed the report in detail and he decided, along with the FA board, that Sampson had "overstepped the professional boundaries between player and coach".

"I didn't have an argument with him about this case in point", Glenn said. We thought the conduct issues raised in the report was the problem.

An FA statement said: "The full report of that [2014] investigation was only brought to the attention of the current FA leadership last week".

His contract has been paid up in full by the FA.

The FA clarified that the claims involved more than one player. "I think now we have to look very seriously at her concerns that her allegations were not investigated properly and there are still questions to be answered".

He said on the Today programme on Radio 4: "Be it Martin Glenn or whoever it is at the FA, if it's clear that they ignored advice and warnings that were clear, then I think their position does become untenable".
