Montgomery-based Caddell Construction Co.is among four companies that have been awarded contracts by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to build a prototype border wall.
In total all the prototypes will cost $3.6 million and they will be built near San Diego, California.
WASHINGTON - A Tempe company was one of four firms named Thursday to build the first prototypes of President Donald Trump's proposed border wall with Mexico, Customs and Border Patrol officials announced.
The prototypes will "help us create a "design standard" for operational walls", CBP said. The DHS is also expected to commission four non-concrete wall prototypes.
The CBP plans to announce an additional four more companies selected to build prototypes using materials other than reinforced concrete that could provide see-through capability in the next week.
President Trump last week said that he was prepared to shut down the government if lawmakers did not approve funds for building the "big, lovely wall" he promised during his presidential campaign. Homeland Security officials will then take 30 to 60 days to test the prototypes to see if they can be penetrated or otherwise compromised.

Vitiello said construction could begin in a matter of weeks in a stretch along the San Diego border sector.
CBP in March requested proposals for two categories of barriers: a concrete wall design and another called "other than concrete".
Depending on the assessments, Vitiello said the structures could remain in place, be moved to other locations or be torn down altogether.
The contracts for the companies to build the prototypes range from just under $400,000 to just under $500,000.
However his promise for the southern neighbours to pay for it has been rejected by Mexican President Pena Nieto, who informed Mr Trump in August the country will not contribute funds to the project. At a rally in Arizona earlier in August, Trump threatened to force a shutdown if Congress doesn't appropriate money for the wall in September.
The awarding of the contracts for a border wall comes as the government assesses the damage from Hurricane Harvey, which has devastated parts of Texas.
