During his opening speech, Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi referred to Iran as an "honourable country" and said ties had warmed with its neighbour since the blockade.

The four have also insisted that Doha scales down its relations with Iran, as part of conditions to renew relations.

On September 7, at a press conference at the White House with the emir of Kuwait, president Donald Trump promised to end the Gulf crisis that began on June 5 when four Arab countries - Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt - imposed a land, sea and air blockade on Qatar.

"Then we saw this vicious media campaign against Qatar, waged by rabid dogs backed by some regimes", Muraiki said, adding: "Mr Anwar [Gargash] forgot to mention that the four blockading countries tried a military action against my country in 1996". The group, led by Saudi Arabia, has accused Qatar of sponsoring terrorism.

It related to a report that Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had spoken over telephone, an important step after four months of crisis between the two countries.

The Saudi authority for the first time in the history banned Qatari pilgrims and refused to pay any attention to the voices raised for facilitating Qatari pilgrims by global human rights organisations and Muslims across the globe, harming the sacred spirit of Islam using the fifth pillar of Islam - the Haj - as political tool to pressure Qatar and achieve political goals under the ongoing diplomatic crisis developed with the imposition of siege on Qatar.

They presented Qatar with a list of demands, among them downgrading ties with Iran, and gave it an ultimatum to comply with them or face unspecified consequences.

In response, Qattan said: "Congratulations to Iran and soon, God willing, you will regret it". Qatar denies the charges and says the economic boycott aims at neutering an independent foreign policy it says promotes peaceful regional reform and fighting terrorism.

He further criticized what he called Qatar's "historic support" for terrorism and extremist factions.

In August, Turkey and Qatar carried out a joint military exercise called "Iron Shield", which included training of leaders to assess and control the situation on the ground, as well as strengthening coordination between the two sides.

A number of businessmen in Qatar have called for greater support for national products and for products from boycotting countries not to be imported.
