Murray has denied all allegations and said that this is part of a plot to bring him down due to his progressive views and stance on gay rights, and the latest allegation is from an estranged member of his family.
In a statement released Tuesday, Murray adamantly denied the allegations, but said his resignation would be "best for the city".
"I think it is the right thing to do", Nickels said of Murray's resignation.
Murray tried to remind the city of his accomplishments.
Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant blasted her colleagues for not acting to push Murray from office sooner.
Dyer said the fact that other city leaders have come out in support of the mayor is damaging to his victims.
Murray resigned two hours after the Times published its story.

What we learned from Michigan Football's 33-17 victory over Florida
Florida's only point on offense came courtesy of a 42-yard field goal from Eddy Pineiro on the first drive of the game. Suspensions cost them 10 players for Saturday's game, including top playmakers Antonio Callaway and Jordan Scarlett .
Murray, who not long ago was seen as a shoo-in for re-election, ended his campaign for a second term in May amid similar allegations.
"News reports show Murray standing at the publicly owned mayoral podium, with his husband (a Seattle employee) by his side on the taxpayer (sic) time, declaring "vindication" in relation to Mr. Heckard's private lawsuit claims and continuing to slander the lawyers and other victims...", said Dyer.
Urbanist Cary Moon had done so prior to the latest allegations, first in May, and reiterated that sentiment in a press conference on Tuesday, calling Murray's response to the allegations "deeply inappropriate and harmful". A Portland child welfare official concluded Murray likely did sexually abuse Simpson, but he was never criminally charged, according to the Seattle Times.
Murray's statement goes on to tout his accomplishments during his 19 years in the Washington Legislature and one term as Seattle mayor.
"A mayor's job is to act with integrity and to ensure that every Seattleite feels respected and safe", Ms. Moon added.
"The City must focus on governance and day-to-day business without distraction", Harrell said. "I have a plan in place for a seamless transition in order for City operations to continue at the highest standard".
Jeff Simpson, Murray's former foster child, led the charge of allegations against the mayor, claiming that while in Murray's custody in 1984, he was molested.
In recent months, he has faced growing pressure to resign as more people came forward to accuse him of sexual assault.
