Sean Spicer, the former White House press secretary whose full-throated defense of Donald Trump earned him derision on television, delighted his former tormentors in a surprise appearance at Sunday's Emmys.

The dystopian vision of "The Handmaid's Tale", the deeply cynical Washington comedy "Veep" and the ever-topical "Saturday Night Live" won top series honors Sunday in an Emmy Awards ceremony that took nearly nonstop aim at President Donald Trump in awards and speeches.

"Wow, that really soothes my fragile ego", Colbert deadpanned, before pointing at Spicer and saying, "Melissa McCarthy everyone, give it up", as Spicer laughed and shook his head.

Collecting the lead actor in a comedy series award, Atlanta star Donald Glover said: "I want to thank Trump for making black people number one on the most oppressed list - he's the reason I'm probably up here".

Here are 8 moments you can't miss from this year's Emmy Awards. "But he didn't [win], because unlike the presidency, Emmys go to the victor of the popular vote".

As of Monday morning, Trump had not weighed in on the show with any tweets.

Abe says North Korea must give up its nuclear program
Japan and Russian Federation will work together in the global society for that", Abe said in a televised statement. North Korea says it needs to develop its weapons to defend itself against what it sees as USA aggression.

Some of the night's biggest losers included two new Netflix shows.

To close it off, Colbert gave an explanation, "Unlike the presidency, Emmy's go to the victor of the popular vote".

"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" is also nominated for outstanding variety talk series, and Colbert's jabs at Donald Trump have helped the show increase its ratings as well as potentially its Emmy potential. "You got to have the big numbers and I certainly hope we achieved that tonight. He's just Walter Much Whiter".

Spicer burst onto the stage to interrupt host Stephen Colbert's opening speech wheeling a podium in front of aghast audience members. "Both in person and around the world!" "I see each and every one of you", she enthused.

The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, held here on Sunday, saw "SNL" dominating the awards with wins like Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Baldwin), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Kate McKinnon), Outstanding Variety Sketch Series and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series.
