Martinez has agreed to a three-year deal with an option, the source told ESPN, confirming a report by The Washington Post.?The value of the pact, which includes an option for a fourth year, has not been disclosed. The Cubs advanced to the NLCS in Martinez's other two seasons with Maddon in Chicago.

It's unclear who will replace Martinez as Maddon's top assistant, but several candidates have already been mentioned, including former Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, who also interviewed for the Nationals' managerial position.

The 53-year-old Martinez was considered the front-runner to replace Dusty Baker, who was sacked last week after two seasons. Since the Lerner family purchsed the club in 2006, no manager had been guaranteed more than two years, not even established and successful skippers like Baker and Davey Johnson. A year later, the Cubs won the 2016 World Series title for the team's first championship in 108 years. Exactly how much of Maddon has rubbed off on Martinez remains to be seen, but the Nationals' new manager does have a history of playoff success. It is believed the announcement is only being delayed out of deference to the Series, and MLB's wish that teams avoid major announcements during baseball's showcase.

Martinez will be announced as Washington's new manager after the World Series.

Having interviewed for numerous mangerial openings in years past, it seems Martinez has finally landed his first gig as a major-league skipper.

As Joe Maddon's bench coach for the last decade with both the Rays and the Cubs, Martinez has always been regarded a future manager around the sport.
