Dozens were injured and killed in Sinai during one of the country's deadliest attacks in recent memory, state media and eyewitnesses said. Islamic militants, including the local affiliate of the Islamic State group, consider Sufis heretics due to their less literal interpretations of the faith.
"It is a cowardly attack that aims to destabilize the [country's] unity, spread bitterness, and make us doubt our abilities", al-Sisi said while addressing the nation, adding, "however, this attack will do nothing but make us stronger and more persistent to combat terrorism".
State condolences poured in for Egypt, including messages from Israel, the United Arab Emirates, the U.S., Russia, France and Britain condemning the violence.

Egypt's security forces are battling an Islamic State insurgency in north Sinai, where militants have killed hundreds of police and soldiers since fighting there intensified over the last three years. But IS has targeted Sufis several times in the area in the past, notably beheading a leading Sufi religious figure, the blind sheikh Suleiman Abu Heraz, previous year and posting photos of the killing online.
President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi convened an emergency meeting of his security cabinet in Cairo in response to the attack.
