Apple has acquired the rights to a new series starring and co-produced by American actresses Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, a spokesperson said on Wednesday (Nov 8).

Aniston and Witherspoon's series will offer an inside look at the lives of morning talk show hosts and the drama and challenges they face.

Brian Stelter's book Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV will provide additional background for the original show.

The order is for two seasons, 20 episodes, of the scripted drama.

The Witherspoon-Aniston series is being produced through Media Res, a production company founded by former HBO programming executive Michael Ellenberg, who is an executive producer on the series.

Witherspoon guest starred on "Friends" in Season 6 as Aniston's on-screen sister. Ms. Aniston's and Ms. Witherspoon's salaries are expected to be over $1 million an episode, according to a person who was pursuing the show.

Few details are known about the series other than its big stars and its concept, which is built around a morning TV show in the style of "Today" and "Good Morning America". Jay Carson (House of Cards) will serve as head writer and showrunner.

This will mark Aniston's first return to a regular series role since "Friends" signed off on NBC back in 2004. The Hollywood Reporter first reported news of the project in July.

It's the second show Apple has officially committed to since it hired Sony TV execs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg in June; a month ago, Apple said it would reboot Spielberg's "Amazing Stories" show from the 1980s.

What remains to be seen, however, is just how Apple will roll out its original scripted series and if it could utilize its streaming music service to do so and if the company - with $260 billion in cash surplus - will turn assets like iPhones to market its programming.
