The current F1 champione-elect tweeted that some of his crewmembers were, "held up at gun point" as the team minibus was leaving the Interlagos circuit in São Paulo on Friday night.

"Gun shots fired, gun held at one's head".

And past year a Mercedes team member was held up at gunpoint in Mexico while travelling from the airport to his hotel.

Hold-ups are a known risk for teams in Sao Paulo and around the Interlagos circuit, with drivers travelling to and from their hotels with police escorts and in cars with bulletproof protection.

"This is so upsetting to hear".

"Valuables were stolen, but all team members are safe and uninjured, which is the main thing", Lord said.

This is the first time Hamilton has gone out in Q1 since Belgium 2016 - 27 races ago.

It was Ferrari duo Raikkonen and Vettel who showed the early pace as they raced to the top of the timesheets ahead of Hamilton and Bottas. Meanwhile personnel from the FIA, the sport's governing body, were also caught up in a separate incident, but escaped unharmed.

During the 2010 Brazilian GP, former world champion Jenson Button was ambushed by gunmen when he left the same track.

"This happens every single year here", he said. Bottas said the incident spurred him on to extract even more out of his performance and seal his third pole in F1. In 2016, ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix, a chauffeur-driven auto was looted by a gunman as a team member was being transported to the hotel from the Mexico airport.

Hamilton, 32, sealed his fourth world title - and third in the past four seasons - on October 29 at the Mexico Grand Prix.

Three Sauber engineers were robbed at gunpoint on the same evening.
