Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Syrian counterpart, Bashar Al Assad, analyzed the political process in the Levantine country and the successful fight against terrorism, at a meeting held today in the southern coastal resort of Sochi.

The leaders discussed various disputes involving North Korea, Syria, Iran, Ukraine, and Afghanistan, according to a Kremlin statement.

Trump called it a "great call" Tuesday afternoon as he left the White House to spend Thanksgiving in Florida.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders confirmed the call, and said a readout from the US side will be coming soon.

"I think now the most important thing is to launch political processes, and I am pleased to see your readiness to work with everyone desiring peace and solution", the Russian President said.

Trump and Putin spoke informally several times when they attended the Apec summit in Vietnam.

When Assad last visited Russian Federation in October 2015, some observers remarked that Putin appeared cold to the Syrian leader.

Russia, Iran and Turkey - all of which have backed Assad's forces - have authored a peace initiatives in an effort to resolve the Syrian civil war that has been raging since 2011.

Turkey and Russian Federation, together with Iran, are the guarantor countries that brokered a cease-fire in Syria in December 2016, leading to the Astana talks, which ran parallel to the United Nations -backed discussions in Geneva to find a political solution to the six-year war.

The U.S. intelligence community has said Putin orchestrated a campaign of cyberattacks and fake news to influence the election in favor of Trump.

He may well have said thank you for saving me - or at least my job.
