The National Elections Commission (NEC) said on Thursday that with 98.1% of the run-off vote counted, Mr Weah had won 61.5% of the vote while Mr Boakai was far behind with 38.5%.

Ms Sirleaf took office in 2006, after her predecessor President Taylor was forced out by rebels in 2003, ending a long civil war.

Weah led the first round of voting on October 10 but didn't get enough votes to win outright.

The runoff was held on Tuesday December 26 between the country's vice president Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party and Senator George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change.

"The electoral commission has two weeks to declare the results, but officials they will do so within four days". His failure to secure an outright majority forced a run-off.

Weah played for some of Europe's biggest clubs, including Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan, Chelsea and Marseille, and won several domestic titles, as well as numerous individual honours during a glittering career that lasted 18 years following his debut for Liberian club, Mighty Barrolle, in 1985.

Charles Taylor is serving a 50-year sentence in Britain for war crimes committed in neighbouring Sierra Leone, but his presence has loomed over the election.

It's hard to exaggerate the importance of today's poll which will seen one democratically elected government hand over to another for the first time in 73 years.

He and Boakai voted in polling stations near their homes in Paynesville, a suburb of Monrovia, the capital of this nation of 4.6 million people.

Taylor is serving his 50-year prison sentence in the United Kingdom for war crimes related to the conflict in neighbouring Sierra Leone.
