Trees that are kept too long have the potential to become fire hazards, so the Carroll-Columbiana-Harrison Environmental Group, based in those counties, shared a few tips to how to safely dispose of live trees after the holidays are over. If it doesn't, cut the tree in half or thirds, and put the pieces in the cart over time.

As a reminder, this program is for Christmas trees only, please no yard waste. Artificial trees are not accepted.

"Our Environmental Management Department is going to be offering free Christmas tree recycling beginning on December 26 through January 15 for New Hanover County residents", Communications and Outreach Coordinator for New Hanover County Jessica Loeper said.

There is also a suggested donation of one dollar per tree.

Before putting the tree on the curb, be sure to strip it of all lights, tinsel, wire, ornaments and whatever non-tree material might be hanging from it. Shortly after the City's curbside pick-up, the County and City Parks & Recreation crews will team up to chip an estimated 2200 trees at Darden Towe Park.

For those that don't have a use for their tree after the decorations come down, CCH will have several drop off sites throughout Harrison County to collect trees.

By combining forces with the Charlottesville Curb Side Pick-Up Program, the joint programs collected over 4200 trees a year ago, yielding approximately 201 cubic yards of mulch.

You can drop your tree off on the select days from 7 a.m.to 6 p.m. Scout groups will distribute door hangers with contact information in their areas of work.
